AEF’s Purpose
The Arcadia Educational Foundation’s purpose is to raise funds for the Arcadia Unified School District. The Foundation is administered by parent and community member Trustees who represent the interests of each of Arcadia’s 11 public schools.

The Arcadia Historical Society and Arcadia Public Library are pleased to present “Lucky Baldwin, the Man Who Was Never Licked!” an interactive program by Ed Andersen that will take a close personal look at the man who was perhaps the most colorful character in the early development of the San Gabriel Valley during the late 1800s. The intriguing tale will weave its way across the western plains, through the bustling City of San Francisco, into the rich silver mines of Nevada, on to Lake Tahoe and ultimately the beautiful Rancho Santa Anita, which one day would become the City of Arcadia. Program in the Mortenson Auditorium at the Arcadia Public Library.

Animal Adventurers: Careers in Wildlife & Critter Care @ Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA

This workshop offers kids ages 8-12 the unique opportunity to learn real-life skills in the field of wildlife and critter care. During this 90-minute workshop, kids will learn about the many jobs involved in running a shelter including animal behavior, husbandry, enrichment, and medical care. The Pasadena Humane Society’s expert staff will present to participants on a variety of animal care fields as well as humane and respectful ways to interact with animals. Kids will also get to go on a behind-the-scenes tour of the shelter and learn more about the Pasadena Humane Society. Tickets
Santa Anita Park’s Pete Siberell Addresses Arcadia Community Coordinating Council
Pete Siberell, director of community services and special projects at Santa Anita Park will be the guest speaker for the Arcadia Community Coordinating Council’s meeting on Feb. 4 at 11:30 a.m. at Church of the Good Shepherd’s Jordan Meeting Hall in Arcadia (400 W. Duarte Road).
Siberell will speak about the upcoming 2019 Breeders’ Cup World Championship race coming to Arcadia this November. He will also discuss the $35 million Santa Anita Park invested towards infrastructure improvements over the past three years and plans for the track to further enhance the guest experience at the upcoming Breeders’ Cup by investing an additional $5 million over the coming months to add premium seating, renovate its dining venues and install new outdoor suites.

Methodist Hospital Foundation's Mardi Gras Celebration Set for March 5 at Santa Anita Park

Mardi Gras King and Queen Dino Clarizio, MD, and his wife, HopeARCADIA, Calif. – The 24th annual Mardi Gras Food Fest benefitting the cancer program at Methodist Hospital of Southern California will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5 at Sirona’s Restaurant in Santa Anita Park. The event is presented by the Methodist Hospital Foundation and promises to once again be filled with great fun, prizes, and entertainment.
Mardi Gras will feature gourmet foods from more than 30 of the San Gabriel Valley’s most popular restaurants, as well as offering libations, a festive parade, crazy costumes, live music, an exciting silent auction, and mysterious raffle boxes all for a great cause. The event also includes dancing to the ’80z All-Stars live band, and the traditional Mardi Gras parade. More than 800 guests attended last year’s celebration and helped raise $145,000 for the new Joint & Spine Pavilion at Methodist Hospital, which opened in April 2018.
Arcadia native Dino Clarizio, MD, and his wife, Hope, will serve as King and Queen of Mardi Gras in honor of their dedication and philanthropic efforts on behalf of Methodist Hospital. For more than 30 years, Dr. Clarizio has served the community, treating thousands of patients as an internal medicine specialist, while Hope has managed his physician office. The two have forged a unique bond and a wonderful life both with the medical practice and their volunteer efforts throughout the community.
“We are honored to be recognized at Mardi Gras this year,” says Dr. Clarizio. “We hope to see a record breaking fund raising event at this festive gathering with guests having a wonderful time.”
Mardi Gras title sponsors include Arcadia Gardens Retirement Hotel and Arcadia Healthcare Center. Sophia Chan, Mark Hafeman and Patty Soldo will serve as event co-chairs and will lead the planning brigade for the festive and fun event.

The L.A. Arboretum’s first ever Moonlight Forest is a mile-long dazzle fest

Here’s a chance to blow your mind while impressing visiting relatives this holiday season (and getting everybody out of the house) at the Los Angeles County Arboretum’s new Moonlight Forest Magical Lantern Art Festival.
The "lanterns" are actually large sculptures of brilliantly colored fabric with hand-painted details, stretched over frames and lighted from within by LED lights. Translation: Your social media feed will love them.
The 66-piece exhibit is divided into three thematic areas. The Children’s World includes fairy-tale characters, herds of dinosaurs and frolicking pandas. The Magical China area features classical Chinese culture, such as a 70-foot-long, 30-foot-high dragon “swimming” across the arboretum lake, and performances by dancers and acrobats.
And in the Nature’s Treasures section, African animals roam a surreal Serengeti Plain and “undersea” tunnels let visitors stroll beneath luminous whales and other creatures of the deep.
This is the first time in its 70-year history the county-owned arboretum has ventured into hosting an evening light display. But arboretum Chief Executive Richard Schulhof said he was won over by the workmanship and craft of Tianyu Arts & Culture, a Chinese company that mixes the ancient tradition of lantern art with high-tech materials to create huge displays of color, sculpture and light.
The company created several unique pieces for the arboretum’s Moonlight Forest, such as colossal peacock lanterns, in honor of the 200-plus wild peafowl who roam the grounds; a California grizzly bear; a coyote; and California poppies.
“I visited some of their festivals in Virginia and Las Vegas and realized their lanterns would be a perfect fit in our landscape,” Schulhof said. “They just look fantastic here.”

Save the date for Crystal Ball 2018 “An Evening with Foreigner”. This celebration, to be held Saturday, October 6, at the Pasadena Convention Center and will honor Sherry and Shone Wang for their many years of faithful support for Methodist Hospital.
Proceeds from this year’s Crystal Ball will support endovascular services and interventional radiology at Methodist Hospital to meet the increasing need of stroke patients who require immediate neuro-intervention, as well as patients with vascular disorders in need of intervention and who are best served in a minimally invasive setting. The hospital initiated its interventional radiology program in 2016 with the recruitment of Dr. K.C. Tan, one of just a few physicians in the country who is trained in both neuro-interventional and vascular interventional radiology.
In January 2018, Methodist Hospital was designated by Los Angeles County EMS as one of 17 Comprehensive Stroke Centers across the entire county, increasing our volume of ambulance deliveries and stretching the capacity of our interventional suites. In order to meet the growing demand for endovascular intervention, we intend to expand our ability to provide essential, minimally-invasive procedures that produce optimal outcomes for patients.

Taste of Arcadia 2018 and Business Showcase at the Taste will be held from 5:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24th, at the Los Angeles County Arboretum, 301 N. Baldwin Ave., Arcadia.
Taste of Arcadia and Business Showcase at the Taste drew about 1,500 attendees last year, who enjoyed the many different foods and tastes from 45 of the most exciting local restaurants, caterers, and wine-and-beer vendors.
The annual Culinary Contest returned with five winners being selected by local chefs. Food judges sampled food, desserts and drinks from dozens of vendors throughout the entire evening.
This year’s Taste of Arcadia and Business Showcase at the Taste features an additional 40-plus business exhibitors, and car dealers with about a dozen of the newest model cars, plus many new activities.
Arcadia Community Coordinating Council to Host Bright Side Singers December 5.

Arcadia Community Coordinating Council (ACCC) members and guests will be treated to a holiday singing program by the Brighter Side Players.
The December 5 ACCC lunch meeting will take place at the Church of the Good Shepherd’s Jordan Hall, 400 W. Duarte Road (SW corner of Duarte Rd. and Holly Ave.), in Arcadia from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m.
During lunch, Temple City High School’s Brighter Side Players, under the direction of Matt Byers, will perform traditional holiday music.
ACCC, a nonprofit organization, brings the greater Arcadia community together encouraging voluntary cooperation of organizations, agencies and individuals to make the community a better place to live. ACCC supports the Campership program designed to give low-income youth, ages 18 and under, who live in Arcadia or attend Arcadia schools, a chance to participate in camps and recreational activities that they may not be able to afford.
